Salt to taste
1/4 Tsp Turmeric Powder
1/2 Cup Finely chopped Coriander leaves
1 Tsp Chilli Powder
1 Tsp Cumin Seeds ( Jeera)
Oil for deep frying
Let's Get started:
Wash and soak the Black Eyed Peas overnight in plenty of water. It has to soak for at least 10 hours, so if you plan to make it in the evening, plan accordingly.
Wash the Black Eyed Peas and drain completely.
In a blender , add the Black Eyed Peas and all the ingredients except the oil. Blend till coarse . Do not add too much water. Just add enough for the blender blade to move. If you add too much water you will not get round vadas and the vada will disintegrate.
Mix well and check for salt. Add if necessary.
The mixture should be slightly grainy and not a smooth paste. It should be thick.
Heat oil for deep frying. When hot, turn the flame to medium heat.
Wet your hands and take a ball of the mixture. Shape into a flat cutlet and slowly drop in the hot oil one by one. Don't turn immediately.
Wait for a few minutes and then slowly flip over.
It is important to cook on medium flame and not on high heat, or the vadas will not cook properly on the inside.
Fry till golden brown on both sides. Drain and serve hot with Tomato Ketchup or any chutney of your choice.
